"Hot spot" puzzles scientists

The Associated Press reports that scientists are baffled by a "hot spot" of ground located in California's Los Padres National Forest - ground that reaches up to 500 degrees (F) temperature, Volcanic vents tend to be about 200 degrees (F).

Investigators "found no oil and gas deposits or vents nearby and no significant deposits of coal. The Geiger counter readings were normal for radioactivity, and there was no evidence of explosions or volcanic activity. "
